Overview

Overview Description:
The American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Course teaches lifeguard responsibilities and rescue skills. Participants will also receive a certificate for CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Participants must purchase the American Red Cross Lifeguard Manual or have access to the online manual during class time. Pre-requisite pool skills must be passed BEFORE signing up for a Lifeguard Course. Please contact Lily Noland to schedule a time to complete the following:

1. Swim 150 yards, tread without using arms/hands for 2 minutes, swim another 50 yards without stopping.
2. Swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-lb brick, kick back 20 yards within 1:40. Pre-requisites include 6-8 hours of online coursework to be completed before the first day of class. Participants must be at least 15 years of age.



Jr. Lifeguard Program

Ages 11-14

Dates:

  • June 3-7, 9:30am-1:30pm (M-F)
  • June 11-13, 9:30am-1:30pm (T-R)
  • June 18-20, 9:30am-1:30pm (T-R)
  • June 26-28, 9:30am-1:30pm (W-F)



Course Description:

  • The Junior Lifeguard Course focuses on building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes, and skills for future Lifeguards. This course introduces participants to lifesaving skills, such as in- water rescues, use of a rescue tube, first aid, CPR, and AED.
  • The Junior Lifeguarding course is a key component of the Lifeguarding program. It creates a lifeguarding feeder program to help aquatics supervisors recruit the most promising Lifeguarding candidates for future employment.
  • 10 spots available per session. Minimum of 7 per session required to run the class. The July session will not open until the June session is filled. Participants will receive a Jr. Lifeguard t-shirt and hip pack.
  • Prerequisites: 25-yard Freestyle, 25-yard Breaststroke, 1 Minute of treading or floating, exit without the stairs or ladder



Core Concept:

  • Junior Lifeguarding has a strong focus on developing swimming skills to help participants meet the Lifeguarding course prerequisite.
  • Participants will also shadow lifeguards in rotation to get a real sense of being on the job.
